KING OF PRISM by PrettyRhythm, 2nd Prism Elite Event

This is just a preview post. Full length summary is here.

part 1

part 2

part 2 comments if you want the comments. You need some nico viewer program to read them directly on the video like on nico.

Event was the 27th april. Didn’t actually watch the event yet, couldn’t watch it live. Too busy and tired to do it now.

Part 2 is the actual event. Part1 is just a black screen, included for completion sake because people may ask where’s part 1. It actually lasted for almost 10 minutes but kakoroku only downloaded the first 2 minutes. I can see all the downtime on the timeshift. Seems they had some kind of technical problem, the event started while the nico live froze on black screen, people in the comments were like “the prism sparkle is disappearing”, “systemu desu kara”, “nikunikuniku! I want to eat niku!” “koujiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii”, and other PR memes. Only those present at the event saw the starting 7~8 minutes, which are probably unimportant anyway.

About why previous post is called part 1 but part 2 never happened: I was busy so I removed unfinished parts of the previous news post, to cut it in two. Initial plan was to finish everything I wanted to put in part 2, then wait till this event the 27th April, summarize it, then publish the summary in part2 with the rest. I couldn’t make it in time. And I can’t even watch this right now. If God wills it in a few days it I’ll do a full summary and finish the post later, and translate some new guidebook interview too. Speaking of that there’s a Kinpri guidebook that got announced too.

For now here’s the most important things they announced at that event from what I read:

Prism King Cup Next Generation Prism Star Grand Election final results:

5th Yukinojou
4th Shin
3rd Kakeru
2nd Alexander
1st Taiga

Special anime thing in the limited edition of the movies BD/DVD is around 20 minutes long.

They announced the Over The Rainbow Special Event. September 11. With OTR seiyuus Masuda Toshiki, Kakihara Tetsuya and  Maeno Tomoaki.  Tickets are 6800 yen. Very expensive. They’ll probably do a live and others things and it’ll be super long or something. And they’ll probably announce Kinpri 2 there.

Edit: Only noticed now thanks to ANN that after the event ended, jp news site like mantanweb reported the movie now earned 500 million yen.

Pretty Rhythm News March 2016

prad6 animage march 2016 released february 10 2016 hijiri jin poster valentine

Previous post

Jin and Hijiri getting valentine chocolate. The poster is from Animage March 2016 released 10th February 2016. One side is Gundam IBO, other is Pretty Rhythm. Director tweeted “I wonder what the people at sunrise will think when seeing this”.

Mainly thanks to word to mouth on twitter, the Kinpri movie got more and more popular and by half of February there was more than 47 theaters showing it, at least one in each prefecture, so the movie is currently shown in “all of Japan” like the official twitter says. Except Okinawa because no one cares. Right now the movie is in 53 different theaters and earned more than 250 million yen.

I don’t know how the movie screenings business works, but I think Kinpri’s situation is very unnatural due to how popular it turned out. The movie started with only 14 theaters showing it, then some theaters stopped showing it while others started. Then during it’s third week there was only around 7 theaters left, but then they started the screening events. As the staff explained during the live event on March 9th I wrote of below, a virtuous circle began with people going to the screening events, tweeting about how fun it is, and more and more people went to see the movie and in turn say how good it is. So there was more demand and more cinemas started showing it.  As a comparison the Accel World movie that got announced will debut right from the start in 24 different theaters, and then that number will probably drop until the movie stops being shown completely.

Some of the new screenings added in February were planned from the start though, and not only added due to popularity. But if it went like originally planned, the overall numbers of screenings wouldn’t have went up as whenever a theater started showing it, one would stop. That list of planned theaters was always on the website, but starting February it got longer and longer. Right now there’s even theaters planning screenings in April, a month from now.

I think the biggest reason it’s getting popular is thanks to fans campaigning on social media so Kinpri gets a sequel. The staff stressed this out a lot during the event on March 9th. They kept saying it’s thanks to people on Twitter. There’s tons of fanart. Tons of one page manga with jokes related to PR in general. A lot of these are stuff with Wakana, Kazuki, Taiga and Alexander since Taiga and Alec are the two most popular new character. And especially there’s tons of people making reaction manga of their own experience with the movie, tweeting it to their friends telling them to go watch it too. There’s even popular seiyuus or authors who are tweeting about Kinpri telling people to go watch it and Pretty Rhythm. Maybe we’re witnessing the start of Japan and the world realizing Pretty Rhythm is anime of the decade.

Usually in the “random” section of these news posts, I always try to post every funny fanart, manga, cosplay etc I see, but there’s so much now I can’t keep up, I only put in a handful of them. Even as writing this post my “things to put next PR news post” bookmark folder got longer and longer. Then again I started writing this on March 5th and it took me a week to go over the folder. This isn’t the longest PR post I did, but I think I haven’t spent that much time on one post since the After Party event post. Something like 20 hours. For comparison sake the Juné interview I posted recently took me 5 hours to translate. Then again I’m mostly doing it for myself, In the 1st place I researched all the info in this post because I wanted to know them myself. I’m not complaining or anything. I’m having fun.

In case you’re wondering, fanart like these that has started popping up have the girls with the new hairstyles they have in their Kinpri cameos.

Remainder: What I always call “screening event” are the “ouenjoueikai”, the screenings where people are allowed to come cosplayed, the lyrics are displayed to karaoke, etc. What you see in the video above. Some are one hour long like the movie. Some are hours long screenings, where they show BD versions of RL episodes, route 4 of the PR&PP movie, and then Kinpri. ( The RL episodes shown are different each time, except some they always show like the finale.)

Most of the time if there’s no source link then the author’s name is in the filename.

I remember back at those Ryukishi07 conferences, the french translator said at one point “I’m autospoiling myself”, beacuse he was translating what Ryukishi san said while he didn’t finish Umineko himself. I know that feeling now. I pretty much spoiled myself all of Kinpri and it’s details now because of all the stuff I read or translated. But I’m sure the movie is so awesome you can still enjoy it after getting spoiled.

Pretty Rhythm All Star Selection Anime Official Guide Book: Shishido Rumi Juné interview

prad3 artist irua juné hijiri wedding dress

Fanart by Irua

Remainder this book was released 31st of July 2014.

Juné’s official name spelling is June. But I don’t really care because there’s better things in life to do than being bothered by how an anime character’s name is spelled. I always wrote it Juné because it confuses my brain to say June, since there’s already the word June in English. While there’s no “Rinne” word in French/English, so I don’t have to spell Rinne’s name Rinné. Anyway I hope you’re not triggered by name spelling because I’m gonna Juné Juné Juné.And I’m not gonna Juné about whether you Juné or not.

prad3 juné figure shishido rumi

The 14th February 2016 Shishido Rumi posted on her blog a photo of her holding a doll of Juné she got from a fan. That’s currently her twitter avatar as well. She really likes Juné and Pretty Rhythm.

It looks a lot like a figure made by this twitter user I posted a long time ago, so I think this person is the one who gave her the figure.

If you’re looking for a game to play you should try out Tales of Innocence on DS or Vita. Vita version is an enhanced port with 4 characters in battle instead of 3, and 2 new characters. The Vita version is Japanese only though. I’m talking about it now because there’s a character voiced by Shishido Rumi in the game whose story is a bit similar to Juné. It’s also one of the best Tales of games. There’s a pretty original story, and there’s one of the funniest and best “crazy I kill people for fun” archetype villain ever in it.

Pretty Rhythm Rainbow Live Anime Official Guide Book: Kato Emiri Naru interview

prad3 38 naru savouring her food gif

Notes:
Not gonna translate the entire book. Not gonna scan the entire book either.
This book was released when Rainbow Live was still airing, 21st December 2013, the day episode 39 aired.

Q: Naru is an unusual type of main character, how did you feel about voicing her?

When I took the audition, I thought she’s a girl that stand out because of her airheadness. After hearing more, I understood she’s a girl that leads to happiness. The difficulty is how to express that happiness. Even when bad things happen, Naru tries her best to make the people around her happy using her own happiness, so I was anxious about if I will be able to make the others seiyuus around me feel like how Naru would make them feel.

Q:The happy naru phrase was something there from the start ?

Yes. But it didn’t have any specifications set in stone. They told me “please say it the way you see fit”. When I asked them “What does happy naru means?” They said “It’s a catchphrase, so it would be good if it leaves an impression”. They’re the words that come out naturally when Naru feels happy, so they have to not feel weird and fit in with the lines said before and after. I also had to say it while thinking it. The sensation of believing the words you’re acting genuinely come from your consciousness. Doing this made me close to Naru I think. I’m actually the type of person that live by “nantoka na~ru” just like Naru. I live trying to be positive. I do feel depressed when bad things happen but at those times I try to get back on my feet as much as possible, and try my best to remain positive. My friends as well often tell me I get back up on my feet amazingly fast, so much that they want me to teach them how I do it. Learning from Naru, I’ve also been trying to be even more positive, both with work and private matters.

Q:Did you receive any particular instructions in addition to your acting ?

Most of the time I was told my acting alone is fine. But for gag scenes there were indications on the script telling me to go “fugya!” and I was told to do it exactly like that. For crying scenes too it was written to not do a normal crying sound but a “fueeen” like crying sound. There were a lot of times when I was asked to do momentarily reactions like these exactly as it said on the script.

Q:Speaking of crying scenes…

You mean the scene where she gets rejected by Kouji kun right. I had to redo the “fueen” crying of that scene countless times. I’d cry normally instead of the “fueen” sound Naru does. Also, conveying how “She doesn’t know why she’s crying, so it’s different from how she’d cry normally” was the most difficult part. I had to draw from within myself the sensation of being rejected, while not being fully aware of your own feelings.

Q :It was a very painful scene to watch.

Naru chan didn’t have the self awareness of getting rejected then. Even now. The fact that she could speak normally with Kouji kun and Ito chan right after was impressive. Kouji kun isn’t the type of boy to show his emotions. Was he interested in Naru chan? Is he interested in Ito chan? Areee? Suddenly Ito Chan? I was surprised by the sudden development. Certainly he wasn’t thinking of Naru in a romantic way, but more like a little sister, wanting to save her, do something for her… Kouji kun also has a timid side to him, so he needs someone strong to push him.

Q:How do you think the romance element will go from now on?

I don’t want Naru chan to get hurt, so I think it’d be best she doesn’t get involved in love for a bit. Couples are appearing one after another, but I think Naru chan and Otoha chan aren’t suited for love struggles like that. I’d like it if they lived their lives peacefully until they naturally find someone.

Q:Is there any line of dialogue or scene that left you a big impression?

The scene where Kouji sings to save Naru. How Naru trying her best to do her Prism Live feels the taste of failure for the first time. She’s usually so happy, but couldn’t bear it anymore, and started crying. It was the first time in the show she brought forth that sort of negative emotion. It was very surprising to see her like that compared to her usual self, I was wondering if she could overcome it. She couldn’t and started crying, that sort of thing is very girly and cute, but I wanted to comfort and help her.

Q:After that point in the show Naru definitely started growing. Is that change reflected in your acting?

The way I say the jumps’ names during Prism Live changes a bit. The most noticeable thing are the songs though. Naru’s my song was made before her development, but Happy Rain’s was made after and reflects how she settled her feelings, and tries to have fun with Prism Lives and make everyone enjoy it. The duo song too, as Naru evolved even more then. Being able to do a show with the person she admires Bell sama, I thought it surely must have been fun for Naru but also a challenge.

Q:Besides your own, which one is your favorite character ?

I think everyone likes Hiro sama. His lines are always super funny, and his gestures always makes you go “Why is he doing this?” lol. For example how he always bite his glasses, or how he was spying on Kouji during the Ito x Kouji kiss scene. Or his Prism Show with how he was on a bed and his ‘good morning” and “I belong to everyone” lines. That one was definitely the most intense. In a lot of ways, I went “Hiro sama kyaaaaaaa” lol. As for the girls, it’s difficult to choose, Wakana is fine, but I like Otoha the most. I think she’s girly, loves everyone in Bell Rose, and she’s genuinely thoughtful of the people around her. It feels like she can heal you with her overflowing love. She’s nice, but will scold you if there’s the need to. I really like her. After that, I’m interested if Hiro sama and Bell sama will end up together or not. Hiro sama likes Kouji but he likes Bell too, which will he pick. Bell also shows signs of caring about HIro, and gets worried about him, will they end up together, or will it stay like this.
(I like Otoha but clearly Wakana >Otoha)

Q:How do you think the story will go from now on?

Right now Rinne’s chan emotions are coming back bit by bit, how she will have to return to the Prism World is what piques my interest. When Rinne chan goes back to the Prism World, what will happen to the Pair Tomos? Naru and the others won’t be able to do Prism Lives anymore lol. Just like Hijiri san, I’m thinking a lot about the future of the Prism Show scene lol.

Q: A word to the readers to wrap things up ?

Contrary to the expectations you can have of a show aimed at children, there’s a lot of details adults can greatly enjoy too. Like dealing with frustration, discouragement, relationships between fiends, gloomy family environments… each character’s drama is expended upon, yet there’s not a character overshadowed by another, I think this is one of the nice things about this series.
I don’t know myself either how things will go from now on, so I look forward to discovering it together with everyone.
